Google's AI answers now link out more. Can you tell which buyers they send you?

AI search is starting to send real traffic, and it's just as easily lost from your reports. What changed this month and how to measure it.

Google's AI answers now link out more. Can you tell which buyers they send you?

For a couple of years, AI answers were a one-way street: they read your website and told the user what they needed, and the user never clicked through. That is starting to change, and the change matters for any business that wins work through its website.

What changed in October

On 15 October 2026 Google updated how AI Mode and AI Overviews handle links. It increased the number of inline links inside answers and moved them higher, added a section at the top of some answers listing the official sources it used, and widened where article carousels appear. In plain terms: AI answers are now pointing users to specific websites more often, so being the source an AI cites is becoming a real route to enquiries rather than a dead end.

The same week showed the other side of that coin. From about 8 to 15 October, links from ChatGPT stopped carrying their usual tracking tag, so analytics tools logged those visits as “direct” traffic instead of as coming from ChatGPT. OpenAI confirmed it was a technical error and fixed it within about a day. But for that week, any business watching its reports would have seen AI referrals apparently collapse and “direct” traffic jump – and might have drawn the wrong conclusion.

Why this is a board-level number, not just a marketing one

Buyers increasingly shortlist suppliers inside an AI answer before they ever reach your site, something we covered in how UK buyers now shortlist suppliers. If that is becoming a source of new business, you need to be able to see it – otherwise you are making budget decisions blind, or worse, on bad data. The episode above is the warning: AI traffic is both newly valuable and easily mis-measured.

How to track AI search traffic

You will not get a single perfect number, but you can build a reliable picture.

  • Separate AI referrals in GA4. Create a channel or segment that groups the main AI sources – chatgpt.com, gemini.google.com, perplexity.ai, copilot.microsoft.com and similar – so they are reported together rather than scattered or hidden in “direct”.
  • Watch “direct” for sudden jumps. A spike in direct traffic that coincides with a drop in a known AI source is usually an attribution problem, not a real change in behaviour.
  • Use Google Search Console. Its performance reporting now reflects AI surfaces, so it is the most reliable source for how your site appears in Google's AI answers.
  • Track enquiries, not just visits. Make sure your forms capture how people arrived, so you can tie AI-sourced visits to actual leads rather than counting clicks.
  • Don't over-react to one week. Judge the trend over a month or a quarter, not a single reading, precisely because these platforms change how they report with little notice.

What to ask your marketing team or agency

Three questions will tell you whether anyone is actually watching this: Can you show me how much of our traffic and how many enquiries come from AI tools? How are those visits being categorised in our analytics? And are we set up to be cited by AI answers in the first place – clear content, structured data and strong reviews? If the answer to any of these is a shrug, that is the gap to close.

Frequently asked questions

Is AI search traffic worth measuring yet for a B2B business?

Yes, if only to establish a baseline. Volumes vary by sector, but the direction is clear, and the businesses that understand the channel early will adapt faster than those that wait for it to become obvious.

Why does AI traffic show up as “direct”?

When a link from an AI tool carries no referral information or tracking tag, your analytics has no way to know where the visitor came from, so it files them under “direct”. That can happen by design or, as in October, by accident.

How do we get cited by AI answers?

Broadly the same fundamentals that help with search generally: clear, accurate content that answers real questions, correct structured data, consistent business information and genuine reviews. There is no paid shortcut into organic AI citations today.
